Hurry

A short horror movie project with the title ‘Hurry’ that is in the works, for which I have been asked to design a monster that represents impulsion and prejudice.

I have been brainstorming the appearance of this monster in terms of the way it visually communicates the themes that will play in this short film. A first idea was a simple nightmarish shroud with intruding eyes, keeping in mind that the budget of the film will largely decide what will be possible.

A second iteration of this approach is a more humanoid shape with a skull-like head. Additionally a cold light emanates from its eyes and mouth. An idea is that when viewing this monster, it is unclear whether this is just a projected shadow onto a surface, or its real body.

Despite potential constraints, I thought it would be a shortcoming of mine if I didn’t present all the wild ideas that were floating in my mind. Therefore, I went on to design a more organic being, starting with its torso. As noted in descriptions, I sketched some muscled bodies. One point of inspiration was Bruce Lee’s body, who had particularly wide lats.

The rest of the body needed some specific features as well.

Noticing I obviously hadn’t been focusing on the head/face yet, I thought one way of making this monster more iconic was to put it right on its torso.

Eventually all pieces had to come together in some way. Like some kind of catalogue I displayed all my ideas in a row for the director/writer to pick from. We’ll see what end result will be used.
